4 Kilos Grimalt Caballero 2015

4 Kilos Grimalt Caballero 2015

"Their personal view of Callet is bottled under their names, of which I tasted the 2015 Grimalt / Caballero, a direct version with little intervention with the vinification. It's a field blend with 10% Fogoneu, which they reckon adds floral notes and volume in the palate, as the vineyard they use achieves a good ripeness with few polyphenols. These are the last two vineyards to be harvested, totaling no more than half a hectare. The grapes fermented in 225-liter oak barrels and then aged in second use 600-liter ones. This was very recently bottled, and the wine felt very closed. The palate shows very good balance, with very subtle effect of the oak (they have reduced the use of new barrels, and they'd like to age this in foudre, but the volume is never enough). It slowly opens up and shows the telltale violets and mineral aromas, which are also present in the palate, which revealed very fine-grained tannins and was especially balanced. Only 800 bottles produced in 2015. It was bottled in August 2017. Drink: 2018-2025. 95 points

I tasted the latest wines from 4 Kilos, certainly the best I know from Mallorca. Francesc Grimalt and Eloi Cedo have advanced in their understanding of the soils and the local varieties."
