Alves de Sousa Berco 2011

Alves de Sousa Berco 2011

Availability: Out of stock

"The 2011 Berço (meaning "cradle") is a new Branco, a blend of 40% Arinto and 60% Avesso that was aged for 15 months in new, light toast, French oak. Sourced from vines in a north-facing vineyard at 600 meters, this Branco, with its unusual Douro blend, has a cool feel and remarkable acidity. Tiago Alves de Sousa said, "It was in the high altitudes of Medrões, at Quinta da Aveleira, that the Alves de Sousa family was born to wine five generations ago. [In other words, the cradle.--M.S.] Far from the river. Far from the heat. Protected by the Marão mountains. It was in these slopes that in the early 90s we’ve started looking differently to the white grapes...from the higher and cooler lands.." This was, in fact, held back for late release (hitting the USA in September, 2015) to allow the wine more time to integrate. Lovely, but still energetic now, it is bright with a stonewashed touch on the finish. It is an interesting combination. It handles its oak well, too, the acidity easily slicing through it. Acidity preserves and this should hold well, but let's exercise a little caution just now. Drink: 2015-2021. 91 points"
