"The Cantina Terlano 2017 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Gries stands apart from the estate's Lagrein Riserva Porphyr, thanks to a slightly more tart and acidic fruit profile. Like the other wine, the Gries primarily delivers dark fruit intensity with plum cake and black cherry; however, you also get some zesty spice and crisp forest fruit that makes your mouth pucker. There is a lot of pretty energy and intensity in this Northern Italian Lagrein. Production is 45,000 bottles. Drink: 2020-2030. 92+ points

There are no major changes to report from Cantina Terlano this year. However, I was very pleased to receive a harvest press release—no, not for grapes, but for asparagus. I did not know this, but the Cantina Terlano cooperative members also farm the pointy spring vegetable, and the 2020 harvest brought in 45,000 kilograms of asparagus in April and May. Specifically, these are Margarete asparagus, which are light gold or white in color with delicate flavors. They make a perfect pairing to one of the local Sauvignon Blanc-based wines, served with cold ham and shaved eggs. I am delighted to learn that the South Tyrol asparagus harvest is accompanied by a Terlano asparagus festival, in which an asparagus queen is crowned and paraded in costume to mark the opening of asparagus season."
