Geographically speaking, Basilicata is way down south but not quite in the heel of Italy and Aglianico del Vulture is its only DOC zone. Aglianico is an early-budding, late-ripening variety which makes powerful red wines of intensity, concentration and finesse. It is a noble grape variety as many of you may already know from the wines of Mastroberardino and Galardi (to name two top exponents) who make their wine over the provincial border in Campania. Aglianico del Vulture is special because it is grown on volcanic soil and at a very high altitude: the norm is 1,800 feet and above. This is the main reason why this variety is late-ripening - harvests in this northern pocket of Basilicata, sandwiched between Campania and Puglia, do not as a rule start until mid-October and in some cases not until mid-November! This means that the fruit can ripen at its own pace, thus diminishing the requirement for more interventionist wine-making later. Aglianico del Vulture are deep red, powerful wines with finely grained tannins and high acidity. The best examples also offer intense notes of plum and chocolate - a delicious combination of structure and texture.
