This was my first actual visit to Close Henri, the upper Wairau property purchased by Loire-based Henri Bourgeois in 2000. It was 100 hectares of sheep pasture then, but it has been planted to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir at relatively high densities of 5,000 vines per hectare. Wines come exclusively from the home property, which has been certified organic since 2013. In addition to the listed wines, I also tasted two 2016 Sauvignons bottled from different terroirs. As yet unnamed, one came from clay, the other from stones. Both were raised in Stockinger demi-muids. If released, they should make for an interesting contrast, with the clay bottling showing more power and austerity and the stones bottling more open and fruit-driven."
