"Hints of cracked pepper accent raspberry and cherry fruit on the nose of the 2016 Saint Joseph Silice. A medium to full-bodied, supple, charming wine, with silky tannins, it should be consumed over the next 4-5 years. Drink: 2018-2023. 90 points

The stems from the 2018 harvest were piling up in the town square of Mauves when I pulled in to visit with the affable Jerôme Coursodon at his family's domaine. Like all of the vignerons I spoke to on this trip, he was excited about the potential of 2018 but reminded me that the past several vintages have been strong. In 2017, Coursodon said, "It was a hot, sunny year, but the wines are fresh and not too heavy," a trait he attributes to the granitic soils around Mauves. With six cuvées of Saint Joseph (two white and four red), all from near the village, Coursodon is one of the producers helping to raise the image of the appellation. New to me this year was the family's Vin de France Etincelle, a Viognier-Roussanne blend they've been producing since 2015."
