De Martino Tres Volcanes Chardonnay 2017

De Martino Tres Volcanes Chardonnay 2017

Availability: Out of stock

"Born to replace the disappeared Chardonnay from Quebrada Seca (the vineyard died from the drought!), the 2017 Tres Volcanes Chardonnay comes from Malleco, a completely different region in the south of the country. The vineyard belongs to Errázuriz winemaker Francisco "Pancho" Baettig, who planted it in 2013 on clay and volcanic soils in Traiguén, some 650 kilometers south of Santiago. This is a rainy zone, with around 1,000 liters of rain per year, a significant part of which occurs during the summer. The full clusters were pressed, and the must was allowed to have contact with the air in an oxidative way. It fermented in used barriques with indigenous yeasts and matured in oak foudres for some 16 months. This is the first year they made this wine, and they have found a cool-climate Chardonnay, with nicely integrated oak. It has a mellow texture, with clean, focused flavors and a nice compromise between volume and verticality. 13,333 bottles and 180 magnums were filled in July 2018. Drink: 2018-2023. 92+ points

De Martino is one of the quality leaders from Chile, and they are still working in Itata, a project they started in 2011. And in 2017, they have a Chardonnay from Traiguén, in the Malleco Valley further south. Also in 2017, they started using more concrete vats and less stainless steel."
