"Sergio Germano's 2011 Barolo Riserva Lazzarito is a good choice for drinking now and over the next few years, before the fruit fades too much further. The sweet tobacco, cherry, anise, leather and dried flowers are nicely delineated. Soft, silky tannins add to the wine's open-knit, alluring personality. The 2011 is an attractive, mid-weight wine, but I have to think a little less oak influence would be hugely beneficial here. Drinking window: 2017-2021. 88 points

My most recent visit with Sergio Germano was quite interesting, as I had a chance to taste the first Barolos from Vigna Rionda Germano has made since he replanted his parcel in 2011. Interestingly, Germano is doing his Rionda with 100% whole clusters. Unlike other wines made with whole clusters, like Burlotto’s Barolo Monvigliero, or many Pinots and Syrahs, the Germano Rionda has very little obvious stem character. Needless to say, it will be fascinating to see where those wines go in the coming years. In the meantime, there is plenty to like in these new releases. The 2013 Prapò and Ceretta Barolos are terrific. As is often the case, I find the Lazzarito - the current release is 2011 - a bit overoaked. Even so, this is an estate to watch for the future."
