"Struck flint and hints of sweet corn and toasted grain accent white peaches and ripe pineapple on the nose of the 2016 Chardonnay. It's medium to full-bodied but comes across as fresh and lively, with a crisp, mouthwatering finish. Drink: 2019-2023. 92 points

Despite challenging vintage conditions in 2017 and 2018, the current lineup at Greywacke is undeniably successful. "Eighteen ended up being the better of the two," said owner-winemaker Kevin Judd during my January visit. "But they were both hard work." Judd said 2018 combined the warmest vintage on record with record precipitation in February. He seems equally comfortable with Riesling and Pinot Gris as he is with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, using wood for portions of their élevage, just as in the Burgundy varieties. For Riesling, Judd said, "The oak is just to get some evolution—it lets the sulfides [most of the wines here are fermented with indigenous yeasts] become less stinky." Don't overlook the terrific series of botrytis wines!"
