"On the nose, the 2016 Clonal Selection Elgin Syrah is softly floral with a mineral tone and subtle hints of black fruit plus nuances of black pepper. The palate shows tremendous complexity with skillfully balanced oak tones over blackberries, fresh herbs and fresh cracked black pepper. The finish is elegantly focused and something special. Power and elegance at its finest. This is akin to something from the northern Rhône without the tight mineral grip. Well done! A truly beautiful wine. 9,300 bottles were made. Drink: 2019-2036. 93+ points

Richard Kershaw MW has put forth an impressive array of thoughtfully crafted bottles that express the terroir or clone from which they spring. With the Clonal Selection range, Kershaw experiments with identical clones of Chardonnay and Syrah grown in different soils and bottled individually. These wines possess an honesty that is refreshing and demonstrates the nature of clonal selection and its interaction with terroir via the focus of a Master of Wine. They are limited production and available only through allocation. It will be your lucky day if you seek them out and attain a bottle for yourself."
