"Bottled just a few weeks prior to my visit, the 2018 IGP Saint Guilhem le Desert Blanc was already looking good. Pear, melon and tangerine notes mingle on the nose of this medium-bodied blend of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Petit Manseng and Viognier. Like always, it's a touch off-dry on the finish, balanced by some delicate Viognier-derived tannins and peppery spice. Drink: 2019-2023. 92 points

As a producer whose wines have frequently been featured in this publication, I'm not sure what more needs to be said about Mas de Daumas Gassac. On this visit, I did have time to visit the vineyards, which readers might be interested to know vary considerably from top to bottom. The highest parcels, at around 700 meters above sea level, include a high proportion of fractured limestone; these are planted to white grapes—predominantly Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Petit Manseng and Viognier. At lower altitudes, the estate has deep red clays, which are planted to red varieties—mainly Cabernet Sauvignon. The old Cabernet vines are being gradually replaced, so quantities of the top wine are limited to about 8,000 cases per year."
