Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux Grand Cru 2010

Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux Grand Cru 2010

"Tasting note

Moderate wood influence surrounds aromas of black cherry, raspberry, earth and a plethora of spice notes. There is a wonderful inner mouth perfume to the pure and muscular medium weight flavors that possess plenty of dry extract that pushes the firm supporting tannins to the background on the intense and distinctly austere finish. This is quite supple on the mid-palate but will still require 12 to 15 years to realize its full potential.

From the climats of Les Rouges du Bas and Les Quartiers de Nuits aged in 80% new oak

Producer note

Fans of the domaine should note that the confusing two name convention employed here for years (Domaine Georges Mugneret and Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg) is finally over and the new, and only, name is Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg. Sisters Marie-Andrée and Marie-Christine Mugneret succinctly described the 2011 vintage as "complicated. We had a great, and very early, start to the season as it was both hot and dry but a wet and cool summer slowed things down somewhat. We still harvested very early as we picked from the 1st to the 4th of September. There was moderate sorting required and those losses ran between 5 and 10%, depending on the sector in question. One of the aspects that struck as very interesting was just how savory the grapes were when they were picked and the fermentation room had the most glorious smell during the vinification. Sugars were average to slightly above average at between 12 and 12.5% potential alcohols but with first-rate phenolic maturities. If fact it's surprising just how ripe the structural elements were yet we also kept really good acidities. The wines are more concentrated than they were in 2007 but with the same very fine grain to the tannins. The 2011s should drink well young but because they're very well balanced, they should age beautifully for those clients who prefer older wines." The hits just keep on coming at this domaine and it's remarkable how good both vintages are. My advice is not to miss them!
