Bernard Faurie Hermitage Greffieux/Bessards 2013

Sold Out

“(white capsule): Glass-staining ruby. Intense smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of ripe dark berries, cherry liqueur and pungent flowers. Spicy and sharply focused on entry, then deeper and sweeter in the mid-palate, offering spice-tinged, palate-staining black raspberry and violet pastille flavors supported by tangy acidity. Finishes bright, silky and extremely long, showing remarkable clarity, harmonious tannins and a lingering mineral note. Drinking window: 2021-2028. 96 points

While many winemakers of Bernard Faurie’s generation have passed their pipettes off to their children or child-in-law, this fifth-generation farmer and winemaker hasn’t slowed down. In fact, he is currently making the best wines of his career, which is now well into its fourth decade. All of Faurie’s vines, which are planted in the most prestigious vineyards of their appellations (Le Méal, Greffieux and Bessards for his Hermitage, for example) are now over 100 years old, and his wines display a distinct transparency, even in ripe vintages. New oak use here is minimal, and even though his cellar, underneath his house at the south end of Tournon, is old and cramped, he’s a compulsive neat freak, so his wines are vibrant and pure, with no rustic character.”
