Carl Loewen Maximer Herrenberg 1896 Riesling Alte Reben Trocken 2019

“From old, ungrafted vines on reddish slate soils, the 2019 Maximin Herrenberg Alte Reben Trocken 1896 (White Label) offers a deep, sublime and flinty bouquet of perfectly ripe Riesling fruit with a tendency to tropical fruit aromas that are perfectly intertwined with notes of crushed, smooth slate. Pure yet intense and even juicy on the palate, this is a salty-piquant and refined dry Riesling with just the perfect amount of residual sugar. The 2019 is perfectly balanced and piquant, and it already drinks very well, developing a long and salty-piquant finish. This is an excellent dry Riesling from the Maximin Herrenberg’s oldest parcel, which was planted in 1896. Tasted in April, 124 years later. Drink: 2020-2045. 94 points

Carl Loewen offers another excellent range of Rieslings from partly very old vines. The dry, or dry-styled, crus are my favorites again from the 2019 vintage and belong to the Mosel’s first league with the black labeled Maximin Herrenberg 1896 as primus inter pares. It is a great Mosel Riesling that should be aged for years if not decades.”
