Henri Billiot Cuvee Laetitia Grand Cru N.V.

“The NV Brut Cuvée Laetitia, a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, vintages 2016 to 1983, is another gorgeous wine in this range from Billiot. The greater presence of Chardonnay vis-a-vis most of the other wines in the range adds lift and brilliance. The balance of energy and breadth is so appealing here. I would give this a good bit of air, as it really opens up beautifully. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Disgorged: March 3, 2022. Drinking window: 2022-2027. 94 points

Billiot has been through some ups and downs, so it is great to see these wines showing so well. The one exception is the 2015 Brut Millésime, which shows the shortcomings of the year. All the other wines are very fine. Billiot farms five hectares of vines in Ambonnay spread across 18 small parcels. The wines are all done in tank, with no malolactic fermentation, except the Cuvée Julie, fermented in oak. Speaking of the Cuvée Julie, it is terrific in this release, as is the flagship Cuvée Laetitia, Billiot’s 60% Pinot Noir/40% Chardonnay Champagne, which is a solera-like blend of vintages 2016 back to 1983.”
