“The 2019 Barbaresco is the first Barbaresco in Massolino’s long history. Effusive aromatics and bright, red-toned fruit lend considerable immediacy and charm, but as is so often the case, that first impression of elegance is backed up by pretty serious tannins. This taut, nervy Barbaresco needs time to soften, but it is so impressive. The 2019 saw about three weeks on the skins, with indigenous fermentations, and was aged in cask. It’s a gorgeous wine by any measure. Vineyard sites are Starderi, Albesani and Serraboella. Drinking window: 2027-2039. 92 points

These are the first Barbarescos in Massolino’s long history. “We had a chance to take over some choice plots from a local family,” Franco Massolino told me. “We are lucky to have Dante Scaglione as our consulting winemaker, so we thought: Who better to make these wines?” I certainly can’t argue with that. The 2019s are stellar wines done in the classic Massolino style. Both Barbarescos are highly recommended. Best of all, the 2019s have that immediacy and allure that makes Barbaresco so charming.”
