“The 2023 Beaujolais Blanc comes from vines in Belleville and is vinified/aged in concrete. lt offers yellow plum and lemon verbena aromas on the nose, with touches of lime underneath. The palate is well balanced, with a lovely texture and a keen line of acidity, even it it lacks a bit of persistence on the finish. Drinking window: 2025-2029. 88 points
Domaine Mee Godard was one of my first visits in the village of Villié-Morgon. Her winery overlooks the vines and offers a stunning vista of the Jura and the Alps. We tasted through her excellent 2023s. Godard explained that 2024 was tougher. Frost and rain conspired to reduce yields to a measly nine hectoliters per hectare in Moulin-a-Vent, thankfully sparing her parcels in Morgon the brunt of the inclement season. I asked why there is a difference between the two locations, and she suggested that it was because of flowering and the fact that her Moulin-à-Vent parcels lie in a more humid spot close to the woods. Signifying the financial precariousness of making wine in Beaujolais, Godard intimated that if the scenario repeated in 2025, it might be more economical to leave the fruit to the birds. Godard’s wines are impressive, perhaps a little more opulent than some others but rooted in purity and balance. Stylistically they remind me of Domaine Anita, albeit with less flamboyance and more mineralité. Prices for the top cuvées are comparatively higher than those of her peers, but in my mind these wines are worth the extra penny.”
