“The 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Stropa is intense, bursting from the glass with a zesty blend of crushed black cherries, blood orange, violet pastille, rosemary and sweet spice. Silken and weighty upon entry, it quickly gains lift through a stimulating core of bright acidity as ripe wildberry fruits cascade throughout. Gently tannic and long yet remarkably fresh, the 2016 leaves the palate reeling with youthful tension under an air of violet inner florals. It’s gastronomic and simply spellbinding. Drinking window: 2025-2040. 96 points
I’ve sung Monte Dall’Ora’s praises many times. The Amarone Stropa is often one of the top wines in every vintage, and the 2016 is no different. Tasting a flight of Amarone, these wines stand out immediately for their energy and purity. However, on this trip, I was particularly impressed by the Valpolicella Superiores, especially the single-vineyard San Giorgio Alto. Here, depth, complexity, minerality and structure all coalesce in perfect harmony. Wines like this give me hope for the future of Valpolicella. Readers shouldn’t miss the 2024 Valpolicella Saseti, a wine made for early appeal and approachability. It’s a model of purity that performs quite well with a slight chill.”
