“The 2022 Vino Bianco Bl.te.le is exotic in the glass with a cascade of tropical citrus and florals complemented by hints of ginger and wet stone. It washes across the palate with glycerol, round textures and ripe orchard fruits enlivened by a tang of sour citrus as a vivid note of nectarine settles on the senses. It finishes long and perfumed with a saline tinge and a snap of green melon. Starting with the 2022 vintage, Gloria Nusserhof has reduced the amount of skin contact in the Vino Bianco Bl.te.le to just 50%. Drinking window: 2026-2030. 92 points
Owner and Winemaker Gloria Mayr is slowly fine-tuning the Nusserhof portfolio while maintaining the tried-and-true ideals that made this estate one of Italy’s best. Tasting these wines reminds me of the magic of older vintages of Giuseppe Rinaldi, Quintarelli and Emidio Pepe. The varieties are different—primarily Teroldego, Vernatsch (Schiava) and Lagrein—but the impact is similar. Mayr farms old vines, some well over 100 years old, both in the estate’s clos within the city limits of Bolzano and on the steep hills of the St. Magdalener DOC. Nusserhof’s wines are often labeled as IGT or Vino Rosso because their interplanted and ancient vineyards do not adhere to modern regulations.
Picking favorites is like splitting hairs, but the 2019 and 2020 releases are fantastic. The 2020 Gloria—a cuvée fermented with 100% whole clusters and not made since 2015—is a standout. Mayr intends to experiment further with whole clusters in the future. Mayr only makes gradual, well-thought-out changes, ensuring that Nusserhof maintains the reputation of excellence that previous generations attained. Readers should note that the reds in this lineup require patience and improve significantly with air.”
