“The 2013 Poeirinho was aged for 20 months in old Mosel fuders (2500L). It was sourced from vines ranging from 80 to 150 years old. It is pretty much a monster Baga, fuller in the mouth than most, elegant and yet very powerful, with that typically fine acidity strafing the fruit and beautiful tension on the finish. For all that, it holds its balance beautifully. This is a long haul, big-time Baga. Give it a few years to settle down at the least. You won’t have to worry about it falling apart for a long time, perhaps longer than I even think. There were 6,100 bottles produced. Drink: 2017-2035. 93-95 points

This Bairrada property was purchased by Dirk Niepoort in 2012. Judging from the new offerings that I saw in Porto, it’s fair to consider Niepoort an established producer in the region already, at least for the Baga and the whites, which seem to be on the verge of spectacular. (The Merlot may need a little work.) The wines presented this issue were generally preview looks–not quite bottled and/or released. Most of them won’t be getting to the U.S. until next year. However, this is an exciting and relatively new project and it is well worth an early preview.”
