"The 2012 Quinta dos Carvalhais Reserva Red is a 52/48 blend of Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz, aged for 12 months in an 86/14 mixture of used and new French oak. Light and bright, with a sharp edge, this Reserva probably doesn't have the concentration of a great vintage, but its mid-palate finesse and gripping finish make it interesting. It is a little edgy and can still improve in the cellar, but this late release can be drunk now, too. Drink: 2017-2030. 90 points

Big companies often don't get respect, but Sogrape does a great job in multiple regions, including Dão (Quinta dos Carvalhais), Alentejo (Herdade do Peso) and Douro (Ferreira). There are also terrific values up and down the lineup. The simple Planalto white in Douro usually punches way above its weight. Recently, I had the low-end Grão Vasco white in Dão (about $4 on a shelf in Portugal) and it showed well, too. Sogrape tends to deliver at all levels. This issue features a nice selection (with some of the wineries separately listed)."
