"The 2017 Marawi is mostly unoaked (but for 10% aged for eight months in used French oak) and comes in at 12% alcohol. This interesting monovarietal—another part of Recanati's mostly-realized plan to reinvent itself—has a dark and burnished feel, velvety texture and a reductive touch—a bit of a flinty nuance that winemaker Gil Shatsberg says is typical of the grape. It does tend to blow off with some air. In just the third vintage, this looks like another success, perhaps a bit sterner and deeper than some earlier iterations, granting that they are not all here together. The grip on the finish is impressive. I hate to sound like a broken record, but it is another 90-pointer in my book. In terms of evaluating how good these actually are in the grand scheme of things, aging potential will be part of that evaluation. Alas, there really is no track record just now. It seems like it can hold reasonably well for 5 years. For safety, I'd recommend that at the moment as a maximum, then we'll see where we are. Drink: 2019-2022. 90 points

Vintage 2017, represented here with several wines, was a hot year, said winemaker Gil Shatsberg. Vintage 2018 was even hotter. He noted that for the Mediterranean grapes, however, 2017 worked well—they ripened fast and did not have to hang on the vine too long. The Wild Carignan in 2017 actually had less alcohol than in 2016 as a result. It seems to me they indeed showed very well as a group. Of course, the Special Reserve red is not yet released for the 2017 vintage, so we'll have to see what that looks like. He liked the 2016 a lot."
