"The citrus colored 2015 Nierstein Pettenthal Riesling GG is pure, elegant and spicy on the deep and aromatic nose, where herbal and flinty aromas underline well-defined mirabelle aromas. Full-bodied, round and lush, with gorgeous intensity, finesse and elegance, this is a Pettenthal with great expression, remarkably fine acidity and silky texture. The finish is intense and juicy but again so clear, finessed and elegant, so full of salts and fine tannins. This is a terrific Riesling with great expression and generous fruit. It will age for decades. Bottled in June 2017, tasted twice in August. Drink: 2023-2040. 95 points

Kai Schätzel is so highly convinced of what he doing in Nierstein that it seems he cannot fail. Not all his colleagues in Rheinhessen or beyond appreciate his old-school style (cloudy-dirty musts from rather early picked and extremely long-macerated grapes fermented with wild yeasts in traditional Stück vats and kept on the full lees until summer) that is rarely charming but always full of character and expression. Schätzel is one of the most exciting Riesling producers along the Rhine River and even if you don't like his firmly structured and straightforward Rieslings and gorgeous Sylvaners when young, you will be impressed by their mouth-filling and structured character after a couple of years. Even the wines of the so called "entry level" are full of expression and they can (or should) age very well, probably better than some of the praised GG wines produced in Germany today. During my next visit to Schätzel I will taste nothing else but matured wines from his early beginnings, so stay tuned."
