"Schätzel's dry 2016 Riesling is predominantly from calcareous but also loess and slate soils. Fermented in large oak vats and kept on the lees until June this year, this 2016 has a bright color and opens with a bright, pure, fresh, floral-scented, very elegant and classic bouquet of white fruits, crushed stones, citrus and herbal aromas. Lean, straight and piquant on the palate, this is a dry Riesling purist at its best. The acidity is pure energy, the tannins are fine but serious and structuring, the finish is enormously salty. Very elegant but with tension and finesse. Drink: 2020-2032. 89+ points

Kai Schätzel is so highly convinced of what he doing in Nierstein that it seems he cannot fail. Not all his colleagues in Rheinhessen or beyond appreciate his old-school style (cloudy-dirty musts from rather early picked and extremely long-macerated grapes fermented with wild yeasts in traditional Stück vats and kept on the full lees until summer) that is rarely charming but always full of character and expression. Schätzel is one of the most exciting Riesling producers along the Rhine River and even if you don't like his firmly structured and straightforward Rieslings and gorgeous Sylvaners when young, you will be impressed by their mouth-filling and structured character after a couple of years. Even the wines of the so called "entry level" are full of expression and they can (or should) age very well, probably better than some of the praised GG wines produced in Germany today. During my next visit to Schätzel I will taste nothing else but matured wines from his early beginnings, so stay tuned."
