  • Guardasole Pio Decimo 2018

“The 2018 Vino Rosso Pio Decimo is a big, powerful wine, yet it retains the sense of transparency that is the single most distinctive attribute of Alto Piemonte wines. Here the flavors are dark and brooding, with plenty of black cherry, menthol, licorice, spice and leather flavors that develop. Readers will find a wine of real gravitas and power. I loved it. Drink: 2021-2030. 94 points

Tenute Guardasole is one of the many micro-estates in Alto Piemonte born from a rebirth of long-abandoned vineyards. The property comprises three parcels that total just two hectares under vine. Organic farming, low intervention winemaking and what is clearly extraordinary care yield reds that are incredibly distinctive. This is a fabulous set of wines from proprietors Marco Bui and Annalisa Gri who look set to join the stars of Alto Piemonte’s new generation.”

  • Leeu Passant Basson Cinsault 2017

“The 2017 Old Vines Basson Cinsault is fuller and riper on the nose compared to the Lötter Cinsault, featuring exuberant wild strawberry, raspberry preserve, gingerbread and dill aromas, all very well defined and brimming with energy. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening, hints of marmalade and orange peel infusing the red fruit, and just the right amount of piquancy toward the finish. There is something “old school” about this Cinsault. Cerebral. Drinking window: 2022-2038. 95 points”
