  • J.L. Chave Selection Crozes-Hermitage Blanc Sybele 2018

    £25.75

“Diaphanous straw-yellow. Mineral-driven aromas of pear nectar, tangerine and yellow plum, plus a subtle touch of jasmine. Juicy and tightly focused in the mouth, offering intense citrus and orchard fruit flavors that are underscored by suggestions of ginger and bitter quinine. The impressively long, penetrating finish shows lingering minerality and fine delineation. 60% Marsanne, 40% Roussanne. Drinking window: 2021-2027. 93 points

By now it’s no secret that Erin Cannon-Chave and Jean-Louis Chave’s semi-négociant operation is producing a range of consistently excellent wines that clearly show the Chave magic at user-friendly prices. While the Hermitage Blanc Blanche will inevitably be compared to the white Hermitage from the J.L. Chave domaine, the wines that intrigue me are that Crozes-Hermitage Blanc and Saint-Joseph Blanc since neither of those appellations are present under the family’s estate label. There may be a domaine Saint-Joseph Blanc, someday, “that’s probably a job that’ll wait for our children to take on,” Chave told me.”

  • J.L. Chave Selection Crozes-Hermitage Silene 2017

    £24.99

“Bright violet. Mineral-accented cherry, boysenberry and smoky bacon aromas are complicated by suggestions of olive and candied flowers. Energetic and focused for the vintage, offering concentrated bitter cherry, cassis and violet pastille flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Closes sappy, smooth and quite long, with sneaky tannins and a lingering suggestion of juicy black and blue fruits. Drinking window: 2022-2030. 92 points

Erin and Jean-Louis Chave’s négociant operation is steadily becoming less accurately referred to as a négociant, since the Hermitage and Saint-Joseph Offerus bottlings are now sourced entirely from the Chave family’s own vines. The Crozes-Hermitage Silène is made from grapes grown in the prime granitic soils of Gervans and Larnage, in the northern and original sector of that sprawling appellation, and its graceful, nervy character shows that pedigree. All of these wines deliver superb value and provide more than a cursory glimpse at this fabled domaine’s style and Chave’s winemaking talent.”
