“The 2019 Gattinara opens with good aromatic presence, but then feels compact and harsh on the mid-palate and into the finish. There’s no way to look past the lack of mid-palate depth, or the angularity of the incisive tannins. The 2019 improves with a bit of air, but the flavors remain a bit dried out. “The 2017 Gattinara Riserva is a powerful, incisive wine. Dried cherry fruit, leather, spice, menthol, tobacco and licorice open with a bit of coaxing, but the 2017 remains quite stern. It is the sort of wine that needs years in the cellar to shed tannin and hopefully develop the inner sweetness that can make Gattinara so compelling. Whether that happens here is somewhat of a question mark today. Drinking window: 2025-2032. 89 points”
“The 2018 Gattinara Tre Vigne is a very beautiful wine. Macerated cherry, spice, leather, licorice, incense and tobacco all soar from the glass, with a touch of warming alcohol that adds complexity. Supple and inviting, with terrific depth, the Tre Vigne is very nicely done in 2018. Drinking window: 2023-2030. 92 points”
